Tesla Optimus in Australia: release date, price and latest news

Tesla's humanoid robot isn't on sale anywhere yet, including Australia. Here's what Tesla has actually said about production, public sales and price, what's only reported, and what would need to happen before one could reach an Australian home. Last checked 1 October 2026.

Quick answer

No. As of 1 October 2026 you can't buy or pre-order Tesla Optimus in Australia or anywhere else, and Tesla hasn't announced an Australian price or release date. Tesla says Optimus production at its Fremont factory in California is due to start in 2026, with the first robots used inside Tesla. Elon Musk said in January 2026 that Tesla would probably sell Optimus to the public by the end of 2027. The only price guidance is Musk's long-running target of US$20,000–30,000 once it's made at scale. Expect the US first; nothing official points to Australia yet.

Checked 1 October 2026 against Tesla's investor updates and the reporting linked under Sources. We'll update this page when Tesla announces anything new.

What Tesla has officially said

Tesla's own investor material is the most reliable guide, and it's careful. Its Q2 2026 update (22 July 2026) says the Model S and X lines at Fremont were decommissioned to make way for Optimus, that first-generation Optimus lines are being installed, and that production is anticipated later this year. It also says the initial builds will go to Tesla's "Optimus Academy" for training-data collection, not to customers.

Tesla's Q1 2026 call (22 April) said the third-generation robot would be unveiled closer to the start of production. On 29 September 2026, TechCrunch reported Tesla had secured US$30 billion in new credit lines, partly to scale Cybercab and Optimus.

When could Optimus reach Australia?

Nobody outside Tesla knows, and Tesla hasn't said. Here's how the pieces fit together:

  • Businesses first. Musk said in January 2025 that deliveries to other companies could begin in the second half of 2026. Electrek, citing The Information (25 September 2026), reports Tesla intends to lease, not sell, early robots to select companies. That's a report, not a Tesla announcement.
  • Public sales: end of 2027 at the earliest. At Davos on 22 January 2026, Musk said Tesla would probably sell Optimus to the public by the end of 2027, once it's confident of very high reliability, safety and functionality.
  • The US first. Tesla's cars and Full Self-Driving launched in the US well before Australia. We'd expect the same here, but that's our reading, not something Tesla has said.
  • Australian approvals. A home robot sold here would need to meet Australian electrical safety rules for a 240 V charger, and Tesla would need local service and parts. Tesla already has an Australian service network for its cars, which could help.

Tesla is touring a display Cybercab around Australia (Sydney in September, then Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Canberra in October, Melbourne and Adelaide in November and Perth in December), according to Tesla North. The tour materials don't mention Optimus, so don't count on seeing the robot.

How much will Optimus cost in Australia?

There's no official price. Musk has repeatedly said Optimus should cost US$20,000–30,000 once it's made at scale, and gave a similar figure at Tesla's "We, Robot" event in October 2024. An Australian price would add GST and any local shipping and compliance costs, and early units are unlikely to be at the scale price. Treat any site quoting an Australian dollar price, or taking an Optimus pre-order, with suspicion: Tesla has no order page for it.

Promises versus progress

Reported hand-reliability problems and slow task learning (Electrek, 25 September 2026) are the main reasons to expect more delays. Tesla hasn't commented on that report.

What you can buy instead

If you want a humanoid now, Unitree's R1 and G1 are sold through Australian resellers as research and education robots. The closest true home humanoid is 1X NEO, which is delivering in the US first, with other markets from 2027 according to 1X. See our humanoid robot tracker for prices and status, and can you buy a humanoid robot in Australia? for what to check before paying a deposit.

If you want a robot to take on chores today, a robot vacuum or mower is the practical choice. Start with our best robot vacuums in Australia or best robot lawn mowers.

What to watch next

  • Tesla's next quarterly update, for confirmation that Fremont production has started.
  • The public unveiling of Optimus Gen 3 / V3, and whether Tesla publishes specs or a price.
  • The first named outside customer, and whether robots are sold or leased.
  • Any Tesla Australia announcement. We'll add it here the day it lands.
