How to choose a robot mower for an Australian yard

  • Size it to your lawn plus 30%. Measure your lawn in m² (Google Maps' measure tool works) and pick a mower rated at least 30% bigger. Ratings assume flat, open grass.
  • Check your steepest slope. Batters and fence lines are where mowers slip. Most handle about 45%; all-wheel-drive models reach 80%.
  • Trees and tall houses favour vision. RTK mowers navigate by satellite and can lose signal under big gums or beside two-storey walls. Camera and LiDAR mowers don't need a clear sky.
  • Match the cutting height to your grass. Buffalo and kikuyu like it longer than couch. Look for app-adjustable height that goes to at least 6 cm.
  • Front yard? Think security. PIN locks, alarms and GPS tracking matter if the mower is visible from the street.
  • Budget for blades. Robot mowers use small razor blades that need swapping every one to three months. They cost a few dollars each.
