Best robot mower for small yards in Australia

Four robot mowers for small Australian yards, chosen by yard rather than by price: how big the lawn is, how narrow the side passage is, and how much shade falls on it. Lawn area is the easy part; what trips robots up is a 60 cm gap beside the house, a two-storey wall that blocks the sky, and a neighbour's fence a metre away. Prices checked 21 October 2026. Up to 300 m² with a tree or a two-storey neighbour: the MOVA ViAX 300 ($1,499), which steers by camera. How to measure a small yard in five minutes

  • Lawn area: use the measure-area tool in Google Maps on your property, then subtract garden beds and paths. Pick a mower rated a little above that figure.
  • Side passage: run a tape across the narrowest point between the house and the fence, at ground level, including bins and taps that stick out.
  • Shade: note where a two-storey wall, a big tree or a pergola blocks the sky. Shaded lawns suit camera or wired mowers; open lawns suit RTK.
  • Front and back: if there's no grass or path between them, you'll need a mower with two maps, or you'll carry it across.

Best for the smallest lawns

MOVA ViAX 250

Best for: Courtyard-sized and narrow backyards up to 250 m²

$1,399at MOVA AU, in stock, checked 21 Oct 2026

The smallest and cheapest of MOVA's camera-guided ViAX range. It's rated for 250 m², fits through a 60 cm side passage and needs no satellite antenna, so a two-storey wall or a big tree next door doesn't stop it. Two maps let it mow a front and back lawn from one dock if there's a path between them.

Lawn size
up to 250 m²; 60 m² an hour in standard mode
Navigation
Two HDR cameras (UltraEyes 1.0); no RTK or boundary wire
Narrowest passage
60 cm (MOVA lab figure)
Slope

Cutting
20 cm width; 2–6 cm height, set by a knob
Runtime
about 50 min per charge, 45 min charge
Noise
under 57 dB
Anti-theft
PIN, lift and off-map alerts; GPS tracking needs the optional MOVA Link module
Warranty
Up to 3 years (MOVA AU)

Watch out for

  • About 50 minutes of mowing per charge, so it cuts in short sessions.
  • Cutting height is set by a knob on the mower, not in the app.
  • MOVA labels it a new launch, so there's little owner feedback yet.
  • GPS tracking costs extra (MOVA Link module).

Best for tight, shaded yards

MOVA ViAX 300

Best for: Small backyards with trees, tall fences or a two-storey neighbour

$1,499at MOVA AU, in stock, checked 21 Oct 2026

Small yards are often the shadiest, which is where satellite-guided mowers struggle. The ViAX 300 maps by camera, needs no base station, and its 60 cm minimum passage is the narrowest of any mower we checked, so it can reach a front lawn through a tight side path. MOVA launched it in Australia this spring.

Lawn size
up to 300 m²
Navigation
Dual HDR cameras; no RTK or boundary wire
Narrowest passage
60 cm
Slope
40% (22°)
Cutting
20 cm width; 2–6 cm height, set manually
Noise
under 57 dB
Anti-theft
PIN, lift and off-map alerts; GPS tracking needs the optional MOVA Link module
Warranty
Up to 3 years (MOVA AU)

Watch out for

  • New to Australia with few independent reviews. Better Homes and Gardens rated it 8.5/10, but that review was sponsored by MOVA.
  • Swiss magazine Bilanz found it got lost several times, was overly cautious around weeds and had no rain sensor.
  • Needs Wi-Fi coverage across the lawn.
  • MOVA announced a $1,399 RRP at launch; its store showed $1,499 on 13 Oct 2026, and JB Hi-Fi's $1,399 listing was unavailable.

Easiest to buy in store

Roborock RockNeo Q105

Best for: Open lawns, if you'd rather buy (and return) at Bunnings

$1,499at Bunnings, checked 21 Oct 2026

It's sold at Bunnings, which makes it the simplest robot mower to buy, see and return locally. Notebookcheck's review of the European model found its RTK navigation and obstacle detection reliable and the app good, and it generally got through passages just under 90 cm wide.

Lawn size
up to 500 m²
Navigation
RTK + visual mapping
Slope
45% (Notebookcheck)
Cutting
22 cm width, 3 blades; 20–60 mm height, set manually
Noise
about 60 dB (Notebookcheck)
Extras
Up to 15 zones, night mowing
Warranty
2 years, battery 2 years (Roborock AU)

Watch out for

  • Notebookcheck rated its edge mowing below average because routing is too cautious.
  • It mowed about 250 m² per charge on Notebookcheck's 300 m² test lawn.
  • RTK needs open sky.
  • Launch coverage quoted $1,409; Bunnings showed $1,499 on our check date.

Best budget (wired)

Husqvarna Automower Aspire R4

Best for: Simple, flat rectangles where you don't mind laying a wire

$999on Amazon AU, checked 21 Oct 2026

If your lawn is a simple, flat shape, a boundary wire is cheap and doesn't care about shade or satellite signal. The Aspire R4 is the least expensive mower here from a brand with dealers across Australia. The Ambient found it cut almost flawlessly once installed. CHOICE has tested it too (scores are for members).

Lawn size
up to 400 m²
Navigation
Boundary wire plus guide wire; no obstacle detection
Slope
25% in the lawn, 10% at the boundary
Cutting
16 cm width; 20–45 mm height, set manually
Noise
59 dB(A)
Anti-theft
PIN code
Warranty
2 years, or up to 5 years with the cleaning kit and annual dealer servicing

Watch out for

  • Laying the wire took The Ambient about three hours.
  • No obstacle sensors: it bumps into things, so pick up toys first.
  • A 45 mm maximum cut may be too short for buffalo kept long.
  • Low slope ratings.

How to choose a robot mower for a small yard

  • Measure the side passage. If the mower has to get from the back lawn to the front, the gap beside the house decides your shortlist. Minimums range from 60 cm (MOVA ViAX) and 70 cm (ECOVACS Goat O600) to about 1 m (Segway Navimow i105).
  • Shade decides the navigation. RTK mowers navigate by satellite and need open sky. Small yards hemmed in by two-storey walls, big trees or a pergola suit camera (vision) or wired mowers better.
  • Size up a little. CHOICE suggests a mower rated for a lawn a little larger than yours. Rated areas assume flat, open grass.
  • Front and back lawns. Separate lawns need a mower with multi-zone mapping. If there's no lawn path between them, CHOICE notes you'll carry the robot across.
  • Neighbours are close. Robots are quieter than petrol mowers, but CHOICE measured around 60–70 dB up close. Schedule daytime runs and keep the dock away from the neighbour's bedroom window.
  • Front-yard security. If the lawn is visible from the street, look for a PIN, lift alarm and GPS tracking. Some mowers need a paid add-on for tracking.

How we researched this

We shortlisted robot mowers sold in Australia on 13–14 October 2026 that are rated for 250–600 m², then compared the specs that matter in small yards: the narrowest passage each can travel through, navigation type (vision, RTK satellite or boundary wire), slope rating, noise and anti-theft features. Prices come from Amazon AU, Bunnings and the brands' Australian stores on those dates. We read independent reviews where they exist (flagging the one that was sponsored) and used CHOICE's buying advice. We haven't tested these mowers ourselves.

Common questions

What is the best robot mower for a small yard in Australia?

For small yards with trees or tall walls, the MOVA ViAX 300 ($1,499 at MOVA AU on 13 October 2026), because it navigates by camera and fits through a 60 cm passage. For open, sunny lawns, the ECOVACS Goat O600 RTK ($1,119 on Amazon AU on 14 October 2026).

Is a robot mower worth it for a small lawn?

It can be if you mow weekly and value the time, but the cheapest models still cost around $1,000. Our guide to whether a robot lawn mower is worth it runs through the numbers.

Can a robot mower get through a narrow side gate?

Some can. Check the minimum passage width: the MOVA ViAX 300 is rated for 60 cm and the ECOVACS Goat O600 for 70 cm, while Segway says the Navimow i105 needs about 1 m.

Wired or wire-free for a small yard?

Wired mowers like the Husqvarna Aspire R4 are cheaper and very reliable on a simple, well-defined lawn, but laying the wire takes hours and changing the layout means moving it. Wire-free mowers are easier to set up and change.

Do robot mowers work in shaded small yards?

Camera (vision) mowers and wired mowers do. RTK mowers can lose their satellite fix under trees or beside two-storey walls.
