Husqvarna Automower 305 review: the dependable wired mower, now up against wire-free rivals

The Automower 305 is Husqvarna's entry point for small Australian lawns: a boundary-wire mower for up to 600 m², backed by the biggest robot-mower dealer network in the country. The same money now buys wire-free mowers that map themselves, so is it still worth it? We haven't used it ourselves; this review draws on Husqvarna Australia's specs, Australian prices and independent reviews. Prices checked 20 October 2026.

Quick answer

The Automower 305 suits simple, enclosed lawns where you want dealer support more than features. It's $1,799 RRP at Husqvarna AU (about $1,792 with an install kit on Amazon AU), handles 600 m² and 40% slopes inside the lawn, but needs a boundary wire laid around the edge, connects by Bluetooth only and has no camera obstacle avoidance or GPS theft tracking. For the same $1,799, the wire-free Segway Navimow i105 maps your lawn from an app. The 305E NERA ($2,999 RRP) is a newer wired model with Wi-Fi and an upgrade path to wire-free EPOS. Choose the 305 if a dealer will install it and the lawn won't change; choose wire-free if you'd rather skip the wire.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

  • Buy it if your lawn is a simple, fenced shape up to about 600 m² and you want a local dealer to install and service it.
  • Buy it if your yard has big trees or a two-storey house blocking the sky: a boundary wire doesn't need satellites.
  • Skip it if you change garden beds often, don't want to bury a wire, or want app control away from home (Bluetooth only).
  • Skip it if theft worries you: the 305 has a PIN and alarm but no GPS tracking.

From Husqvarna AU's product page, checked 20 October 2026. Essendon Mowers lists its weight as 9.4 kg and its rating as IPX5. By comparison the 305E NERA is rated 30% inside the lawn and 20% at the boundary, with 20–55 mm electric height adjustment and Wi-Fi.

Installation: what the boundary wire involves

A wired Automower stays inside a loop of low-voltage wire pegged or buried around the lawn edge and any garden beds. Husqvarna's base 305 doesn't include wire or pegs; the small DIY kit adds 150 m of wire and 300 pegs for $129 more. The 305 has a 15% slope limit near the boundary, so the wire needs to come in from steep edges.

Many Australian buyers pay a dealer to install it, which also activates Husqvarna's satisfaction guarantee. If you redesign the garden later, the wire has to move. That's the main reason wire-free mowers have taken over at this price; our wire-free navigation guide explains the alternatives.

What reviewers found

CHOICE tested the current Automower 305 (published November 2025, updated October 2026); its score and recommendation are for members only. In the same test the Segway Navimow i105E is shown as Recommended.

Most recent independent reviews cover the 305E NERA rather than the base 305. Expert Reviews (UK, April 2025) gave the wire-free 305E NERA a Best Buy for thorough mowing and top-class edge trimming, but called it expensive. TechRadar (September 2025) liked its straight lines and edges but scored it 2.5/5 for performance and value after GPS glitches and no proper obstacle avoidance. Both point to Husqvarna's strength: neat, methodical cutting.

Australian owner reviews of older 305 generations on ProductReview.com.au are few and mixed, and mostly years old, so we've not relied on them.

Blades, running costs and warranty

Husqvarna AU sells Endurance blades from $55 for six, and says blades typically last 3–6 weeks; change them sooner on sandy lawns or after hitting something. That's roughly $250–$475 a year in blades if you mow all year and replace on schedule, less if you mow mainly in the warmer months. The 305 gets firmware updates from a dealer rather than over the air.

Warranty is 2 years for home use, extendable to up to 5 years if you buy Husqvarna's Automower Cleaning Kit, register it and have an authorised dealer service it every year; the battery is covered for 2 years. Warranty claims go through an authorised servicing dealer (Husqvarna AU warranty policy). Husqvarna says it has over 450 dealers across Australia and New Zealand.

Verdict

The Automower 305 is a sensible choice for a straightforward, enclosed lawn when you value Husqvarna's dealer network and neat cutting over app features. But at $1,799 it costs the same as wire-free mowers that skip the installation, give you remote app control and track the mower if it's stolen. Unless a dealer install is part of the appeal, we'd look at the Navimow i105 or Goat O600 RTK first, or step up to the 305E NERA if you want Husqvarna with a wire-free upgrade path.
