What matters in an apartment
- Measure under your furniture. Published heights run from 79.8 mm (Saros 10R) to 101 mm (Roomba 205). Measure the gap under your couch and bed and allow a few millimetres of margin.
- Find a home for the dock first. A self-emptying dock needs a spot by a power point with space in front for the robot to dock. Mop-washing docks are much taller and need room above to lift out the water tanks. Dock sizes are listed with each pick.
- Noise and neighbours. Few brands publish noise levels. Tapo lists 52 dB in Quiet mode and Roborock lists 55 dB or less for the Saros 10R's quiet mopping. Auto-empty cycles are louder than cleaning, so schedule runs for daytime if your strata or neighbours are sensitive.
- Hard floors and a rug or two. Most units have timber-look, tile or polished concrete floors, where a washing mop earns its keep. If you have rugs, choose a robot that lifts its mop or avoids carpet when mopping.
- You don't need a huge battery. Small floor plans mean most robots here finish in one charge. Put the money into a better dock or obstacle avoidance instead.
