How to choose a self-emptying dock
- Bag or bagless. Bagged docks seal the dust away and you throw the whole bag out, which CHOICE notes could help if you have a dust allergy. Bagless cyclone docks (Ecovacs N20 Plus, X11 OmniCyclone) save on bags, but you still tip out a bin and clean the cyclone; techAU found dust trapped behind a rubber ring in the X11's canister.
- Budget for bags. Current Australian prices: Tapo $37 for five at JB Hi-Fi, Roborock $39.90 for three, Dreame $39.95 for three. At one bag every seven weeks or so, that's roughly $50–$100 a year. Check a brand sells bags locally before you buy.
- Claimed intervals are best cases. Brands quote 45 to 100 days between emptying. Pet hair, carpet and daily runs fill bags faster, and the robot's own bin is often small (180–400 mL), so it may empty mid-clean.
- Emptying is loud but short. Published or measured figures run from 72 dB (Qrevo C Pro) to 80 dB (X11 OmniCyclone). Most apps let you set quiet hours so the dock doesn't fire up at night.
- Measure the spot. CHOICE says self-emptying towers can be around 30–55 cm high. Docks that also wash mops are much bigger; the Dreame X50 Ultra's is 59 cm tall.
