Narwal vs Dreame: which robot vacuum brand suits your home?

Narwal built its name on mopping; Dreame on suction, gadgets and long warranties. Both sell a wide range in Australia, and prices on older models move a lot. Here's how to choose. Prices checked on Amazon AU on 9 October 2026, with Narwal AU and Dreame AU store prices rechecked on 14 October 2026.

Quick answer

Choose Narwal if your home is mostly hard floors and mopping is the job you care about: reviewers consistently praise Narwal's mopping and camera obstacle avoidance. Check stock first, though: on 14 October 2026 the Freo Z Ultra ($2,499) was end-of-life, and it, the Freo 20 ($2,299) and the Flow ($1,799) were out of stock at Narwal AU. Choose Dreame if you have carpet, pets or raised thresholds, or want a longer warranty: its flagships carry 36 months against Narwal's 2 years (1 year on some models), though its X40 Ultra ($2,799), X50 Ultra ($2,999) and L-series robots were back near full price at Dreame AU on 14 October 2026. The common complaint about Narwal is software; about Dreame, edge cleaning and occasional warranty friction.

Amazon AU prices on 9 October 2026, except the Narwal AU and Dreame AU store prices marked, and the X40, X50, X60, L40 Ultra VE and L50s Pro Ultra prices, all checked on 14 October 2026. Dreame RRPs for its new 2026 models are from Dreame's Australian launch (EFTM, FutureFive, 1–2 October 2026). Amazon's “RRP” labels on heavily discounted models can be misleading, so judge the price itself. Narwal's two Australian web stores have shown different prices from Amazon and from each other, so compare before you buy.

Mopping vs vacuuming

Narwal's reputation rests on mopping. TechRadar called the Freo Z Ultra's mopping outstanding and its obstacle avoidance near perfect, but said it was not the best on dusty carpet and used a lot of water. Its newest Freo 20 and 20 Edge (launched here on 5 October) raise suction to 31,000 Pa, but had no independent reviews when we checked.

Dreame leans the other way. Australian owners rated it top for performance in Finder's 2026 awards, and its flagships pair high suction with mops that extend into corners and lift or detach for carpet. If you have carpeted bedrooms and a dog, Dreame is the safer bet; if you have tiles throughout and toddlers, Narwal's mopping is the draw. Support, warranty and software

Warranty is a clear win for Dreame on flagships. Narwal's Australian warranty page lists 2 years on the Freo Z Ultra and X Ultra and 1 year on cheaper models, with claims through [email protected]; its general terms also mention a one-year period, so confirm the term for your model at purchase. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply on top of any manufacturer warranty.

Software is Narwal's recurring weak point: TechRadar reported a slow app on the Freo Z Ultra and unreliable task completion on the Freo Z10 Ultra. Camera robots from many brands, Dreame included, have had security findings reported (see our Dreame vs Roborock comparison).

Which should you buy?

  • Narwal for hard-floor homes where mopping matters most. Start with our Narwal Freo review, which compares every Freo on sale here.
  • Dreame for carpet, pets, thresholds or the longest warranty. Read our Dreame X50 Ultra review. The X40 Ultra is no longer a cheap route in ($2,799 at Dreame AU on 14 October 2026), so see our best robot vacuums under $1,000 for cheaper options.
