How long do robot vacuums last?
A robot vacuum is a big purchase, so it's fair to ask how many years you'll get. The answer depends on three things: the battery, how well you look after the brushes and sensors, and whether the company keeps its app running. Checked 11 October 2026.

Quick answer
Roborock, Dreame and Ecovacs all put typical lifespan at 4–6 years with regular care. The battery usually goes first: expect runtime to fall after 2–3 years, and a replacement battery can add years if one is sold for your model. Australian manufacturer warranties run from 1 year to 30 months for most robots (iRobot now gives 2 years on 2026 models), but your rights under Australian Consumer Law can last longer than the warranty. The newer risk is software: when Neato's cloud was switched off in October 2025, owners lost app control and maps years earlier than promised.
What wears out, and when
| Part | Typical life | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 2–3 years before runtime drops noticeably (Roborock, iRobot); 400–500 charge cycles (Dreame) | Replaceable on most models if the brand sells it |
| Side and main brushes | 3–6 and 6–12 months | Cheap consumables; see running costs |
| Filters, mop pads, bags | 1–12 months | Consumables |
| Wheels, motors, sensors | Years, if kept clean | Hair and grit in wheels and dirty sensors are common failure causes |
| Dock pumps and heaters | Varies | More parts, more to go wrong on all-in-one docks |
| App and cloud service | As long as the company supports it | Not covered by any warranty |
Battery and consumable figures from manufacturer guidance (Roborock AU, Dreame, Ecovacs AU, iRobot support). Consumer Reports lists hair tangled in rollers (36%), batteries (21%) and clogs (15%) as the most common problems owners report.
Australian warranties by brand
| Brand | Manufacturer warranty | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ecovacs | 1 year for most models; 2 years for the T50, T30 and N20 families; 2.5 years for the X11, X8 Pro Omni, X5, X2 and X1 | Ecovacs AU warranty page; consumables excluded |
| Roborock | 24 months on current models | Roborock Store ANZ product listings |
| iRobot | 2 years on 2026 models, including batteries; 1 year on 2025 models | IXL Home (shopirobot.com.au), the Australian distributor |
| eufy | 12 months on robot vacuums | eufy AU policy page |
| Dreame | Varies by model; we couldn't open Dreame AU's warranty page to confirm | Check the listing at purchase |
A longer warranty is a useful signal of how long a brand expects its robot to last, and it's one reason we note warranties in every guide.
Your rights after the warranty ends
Under the Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality for a reasonable time, and the ACCC says these rights “can last longer than a business's warranty”. There's no fixed period: a $2,000 robot vacuum would reasonably be expected to last longer than a $300 one. If it fails early through no fault of yours, you can ask the retailer for a repair, replacement or refund even after the warranty has expired.
Manufacturers and importers must also make spare parts and repair facilities available for a reasonable time, unless they told you otherwise when you bought. Buying from an Australian retailer or the brand's Australian store makes all of this easier to use.
The app risk: when the company changes
Robot vacuums depend on apps and cloud servers for maps, schedules and room cleaning. Two recent cases show the risk:
- Neato: the company closed in 2023 and its owner, Vorwerk, promised the app would work until 2028. The cloud was shut down in October 2025 instead. Robots still clean with the start button, but app control, schedules and room cleaning stopped.
- iRobot: filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 and was taken over by its manufacturer, Picea, in January 2026. iRobot said it expected no disruption to the app, and its Australian distributor said Roombas would keep working normally. See our Roomba vs Roborock comparison for what that means for buyers.
Since March 2026, smart devices made for the Australian market must publish a security-update support period under the Cyber Security Act. Look for it before you buy: it's the closest thing to a promise about how long the software will be maintained. More in our robot vacuum privacy guide.
How to make yours last longer
- Clear hair from brushes weekly and wipe sensors, wheels and the dock's charging contacts every week or two.
- Look after the battery. Leave the robot docked between runs; if you store it for weeks, charge it fully first and keep it somewhere cool and dry (iRobot suggests a full charge at least every six months; Ecovacs about every six weeks).
- Keep firmware updated for bug fixes and security patches.
- Use genuine or good-quality parts, and replace brushes before they're worn down to the core.
- Clear the floor of cords, which strain brush motors.
- Choose a brand with local parts and service. Popular models from Roborock, Dreame and Ecovacs have parts on their Australian stores.

Common questions
How long does a robot vacuum last?
About 4–6 years with regular care, according to Roborock, Dreame and Ecovacs. Neglect can cut that to 2–3 years.
How long does a robot vacuum battery last?
About 2–3 years, or 400–500 charge cycles, before runtime drops noticeably. Many models have replaceable batteries.
Is it worth repairing an old robot vacuum?
Often, if the problem is the battery, brushes or wheels and genuine parts are available. If the brand's app has been shut down, think carefully before spending much.
What happens when my robot vacuum's warranty runs out?
You may still be covered by the Australian Consumer Law, which requires products to last a reasonable time. Contact the retailer first.
