Steam mop robot vacuums in Australia: is the Dreame Aqua20 worth it?
Australia got its first steam-mopping robot vacuum this month: the Dreame Aqua20 Ultra Roller went on sale on 1 October at $3,299 RRP. Here's what robot steam actually does, the catches early coverage has flagged, and the hot-water robots that do most of the same job for less. Prices checked 4 October 2026.

Quick answer
The only robot vacuum with on-board steam on sale in Australia right now is the Dreame Aqua20 Ultra Roller ($3,299 RRP at Dreame Australia, where it was out of stock on 14 October 2026; also listed at Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Bing Lee). It sprays 180 °C steam to loosen dried-on stains before its roller mop scrubs them. Early hands-on previews say steam is a spot-cleaning tool, not an all-house mode, and it cuts battery life sharply. Buy it if dried-on kitchen and pet messes on sealed hard floors are your main problem and you want the newest tech. Everyone else will be well served by a hot-water roller-mop robot for half the price or less, such as the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni or the other robot mops on our shortlist.
What “steam” means on a robot vacuum
Most robot mops that advertise heat don't steam your floor at all. They wash the mop pads or roller in hot water inside the dock, and some warm the water they mop with. That's good for hygiene and smells, but the floor only meets warm water.
The Aqua20 is different: it carries a heating element and pushes steam through outlets along the roller to soften dried stains before the roller scrubs. Dreame quotes 180 °C steam that's ready in 8 seconds. Dreame also cites SGS testing for a 99.999% bacteria-removal claim. That's a manufacturer-supplied figure we haven't seen independently confirmed.
| Type | What touches the floor | Example | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-robot steam | Steam sprayed on the floor before mopping | Dreame Aqua20 Ultra Roller | On sale, $3,299 RRP |
| Heated mist | Warm mist from the dock-heated water, no heater on the robot | iRobot Roomba Max 875 Combo | Not confirmed for Australia |
| Stain pre-spray | Targeted water jet on stains | Ecovacs Deebot X12S OmniCyclone | On sale, $2,999 RRP |
| Hot-water washing | Dock washes the mop in hot water; floor gets clean (sometimes warm) water | Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni, Roborock Saros 20 Flow, Narwal Freo 20, Dreame X50 Ultra | Widely available |

The catches (from early previews)
- Steam is for spot jobs. TechRadar, which saw a demo at IFA but hadn't tested it, reports steam is used in zone cleaning of small areas (under about 10 m²), not on every run.
- Battery drain. The same preview reports runtime falling from about four hours to 30–40 minutes with steam on, so expect it to head back to the dock to recharge.
- Not much visible steam. TechRadar's reviewer said the demo was less steamy than she expected. Real-world stain results are unknown until independent tests land.
- Hard water. Anything that boils water can build up scale. Dreame hasn't published descaling guidance we could find; in hard-water areas, ask the retailer what Dreame recommends.
- Your floor's rules come first. Some timber, bamboo and laminate makers restrict steam cleaning. Check your flooring care instructions before using the steam mode.
Cheaper ways to get hot-water mopping
If what you want is a robot that leaves tiles and sealed timber properly clean, these are sold in Australia without on-board steam:
| Robot | Mopping | Price (AUD) |
|---|---|---|
| Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni | Roller mop, 40–75 °C dock wash | $999 at JB Hi-Fi on 30 Sep (sale; recheck) |
| Dreame X50 Ultra | Spinning pads, hot-water mop washing | $2,999 at Amazon AU and Dreame AU on 14 Oct 2026 (sale ended; worth it only if it returns to around $1,300) |
| Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller | Roller mop, Dreame's previous roller model, no steam | Earlier price $1,707.99 on Amazon AU, recheck (RRP $2,999) |
| Narwal Freo 20 | Wide roller mop, hot-water mopping up to 60 °C (Amazon AU listing) | $2,299 at Narwal AU, out of stock on 14 Oct 2026 |
| Roborock Saros 20 Flow | SpiraFlow 2.0 roller, hot-water wash | $2,499 Roborock Store ANZ (RRP $2,799) |
Ecovacs and Roborock prices checked 4 October 2026; Dreame X50 Ultra and Narwal Freo 20 prices rechecked 14 October 2026. The Aqua10 price is from an earlier sale, so check it before you buy.
Who should buy a steam robot, and who should wait
- Buy if you have large areas of sealed tile or vinyl, regular dried-on spills (kitchens, high chairs, pets), and you're happy paying launch price for the newest feature.
- Wait if you'd rather see independent test results first. None of the major Australian outlets had published a full review when we checked.
- Skip if your home is mostly carpet, or if a $1,000–$1,500 hot-water robot already covers your floors. Black Friday (late November) is the next big sale window, but brand-new flagships rarely get deep cuts that soon.

Common questions
Is there a robot vacuum that steam mops in Australia?
Yes. The Dreame Aqua20 Ultra Roller went on sale in Australia on 1 October 2026 at $3,299 RRP. It's the only robot vacuum with on-board steam we could find on sale here on 4 October 2026.
Does the Dreame Aqua20 steam the whole house?
Early previews say no. TechRadar reports steam is used for zone cleaning of small areas, and that it cuts runtime to about 30–40 minutes.
Is robot steam safe on timber floors?
Dreame describes the Aqua20 as gentle on hardwood, but flooring makers set their own rules. Check your floor's care instructions; if steam isn't allowed, use the normal mopping mode.
What's the difference between hot-water mop washing and steam?
Hot-water washing happens in the dock: it cleans the mop or roller. Steam on the Aqua20 is sprayed onto the floor to soften dried-on stains before mopping.
Is the Roomba Max 875 with heated mist coming to Australia?
iRobot hasn't confirmed Australian pricing or availability. ChannelNews reported a US price of US$1,199 in September 2026.
