Narwal Freo review (Australia): the Freo Z Ultra and the range

Narwal sells nine Freo robot vacuums in Australia, from a $599 vacuum-only model to the brand-new Freo 20. Reviewers consistently rate Narwal's mopping among the best. The question is which Freo is worth buying, and which you can actually get. Prices checked 4 October 2026; key Narwal store prices and stock rechecked 14 October 2026.

Quick answer

The Narwal Freo Z Ultra was our pick of the range at $1,049.99 on Amazon AU, but that deal has gone: on 14 October 2026 Narwal AU listed it at $2,499, out of stock and end-of-life. Independent reviewers praise its mopping and dual-camera obstacle avoidance; the trade-offs are heavy water use, a slow app and weak carpet cleaning (12,000 Pa). Narwal's newest Freo 20 ($2,299 at Narwal AU, out of stock on 14 October) has 31,000 Pa suction but no independent reviews yet, and the cheapest Narwal we could confirm with hot-water mop washing is the Flow at $1,799 (also out of stock). Until stock returns, the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni ($999 at JB Hi-Fi) is the better-value roller-mop pick. Mostly carpet? Look at the best robot vacuums for carpet instead.

Ratings and unmarked prices are from Amazon AU on 4 October 2026; prices marked Narwal AU were rechecked at au.narwal.com on 14 October 2026. Narwal also runs two Australian stores (au.narwal.com and narwal.net.au) that showed different prices from each other and from Amazon, and many models as out of stock, so compare before you buy. The flagship Freo Z10 Ultra ($2,499 on both Narwal stores) was out of stock on both.

Who should buy a Freo, and who should skip one

  • Buy if your home is mostly tiles, vinyl or sealed timber and mopping quality is your priority.
  • Buy the Freo Z Ultra only if you find remaining stock near its earlier $1,000 sale price: it was end-of-life and out of stock at Narwal AU on 14 October 2026.
  • Skip if you have lots of carpet: TechRadar found the Z Ultra was not the best with dusty carpet.
  • Skip if you want a quick daily run: reviewers note slow cleaning cycles and high water use.

What independent reviewers found

TechRadar gave the Freo Z Ultra 3.5 out of 5 (Linda Clayton, December 2024). It called the mopping outstanding and the obstacle avoidance near perfect, and listed three cons: it guzzles water, the app is slow to sync, and it's not the best with dusty carpet. The AU Review (Chris Singh, June 2025) was more enthusiastic, calling it one of the best moppers on the market and praising its 15-minute mapping. Its one complaint was that the mop doesn't reach as far into corners as the side brushes.

On the flagship Freo Z10 Ultra, TechRadar (December 2025, 3 out of 5) again praised mopping and avoidance but reported unreliable task completion, inconsistent auto-emptying and a confusing app. That pattern, excellent mopping held back by software, comes up across Narwal reviews.

Price, warranty and support in Australia

Narwal's Australian pages list a 2-year manufacturer's warranty on current Freos (older models such as the original Freo and Freo X Plus had 1 year). Claims go to Narwal Australia support on 1300 452 099 or [email protected]. Your Australian Consumer Law rights apply on top of that. We couldn't find the legal entity behind Narwal Australia named on its warranty page.

On 4 October most Freos were in stock on Amazon AU while Narwal's own stores showed many as sold out. On 14 October 2026 au.narwal.com still showed the Freo 20, Freo Z Ultra, Freo X10 Pro and Flow as out of stock, so check stock before you plan around a Narwal. Bing Lee listed no Narwal products, and our searches turned up no Narwal listings at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman or The Good Guys.

Running costs and consumables

Narwal's narwal.net.au store lists replacement dust bags at $49.95, a two-pack of mop cloths at $39.95, filters at $49.95 (two-pack), a roller brush at $39.95 and floor detergent at $59.95, though all were shown as sold out on 4 October 2026. Third-party accessory kits for the Z Ultra and Z10 are on Amazon AU for around $55–$60. Fit and quality of third-party parts vary, and using them won't extend your warranty.

Freo 20: worth waiting for?

The Freo 20 and Freo 20 Edge launch in Australia on 5 October 2026 at $2,499 and $1,999 RRP (CravingTech, 3 October); by 14 October 2026 Narwal AU listed the Freo 20 at $2,299, out of stock. Both claim 31,000 Pa suction, about 9.5 cm height and 4 cm threshold climbing. Amazon AU lists the Freo 20 with a wide roller mop and hot-water mopping up to 60 °C. Narwal's own pages and launch coverage describe the mop and wash temperatures slightly differently, so we've used the Amazon listing until independent reviews arrive. We'll review the Freo 20 once there's credible testing.

Freo vs the alternatives

At around $1,000, the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni offers a roller mop and a longer 2.5-year warranty. If carpet matters, the Dreame X50 Ultra has far more suction, though its sale has ended and it was $2,999 on 14 October 2026, so it's worth it only on sale. For the full field, see our best robot vacuum and mop picks, or weigh the two brands in Narwal vs Dreame.

Our verdict: the Freo Z Ultra is a strong mopping robot for hard-floor homes, but its sale deal has gone and it was end-of-life and out of stock at Narwal AU on 14 October 2026. Buy one only if you find stock near that price, and accept slower runs and an average app. Otherwise the Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni ($999) is the better-value roller mop, or wait for the Freo 20 to return to stock and get independent reviews.

Common questions

Is Narwal a good brand in Australia?

Reviewers rate Narwal's mopping highly. The common criticisms are app reliability, slow cleaning runs and weaker carpet performance. Current Freos carry a 2-year warranty with local phone support.

Which Narwal Freo should I buy?

Reviewers rate the Freo Z Ultra highest for hard floors, but its sale deal has ended and it was end-of-life and out of stock at Narwal AU on 14 October 2026. The newer Freo 20 ($2,299) and the Flow ($1,799, the cheapest Narwal we could confirm with hot-water mop washing) were also out of stock, so check stock first.

When does the Narwal Freo 20 launch in Australia?

5 October 2026, at $2,499 RRP for the Freo 20 and $1,999 for the Freo 20 Edge (CravingTech). On 14 October 2026 Narwal AU listed the Freo 20 at $2,299, out of stock.

Is the Narwal Freo good on carpet?

Not its strength. TechRadar found the Freo Z Ultra wasn't the best with dusty carpet. Look at higher-suction robots if you have lots of rugs.

Where can I buy Narwal in Australia?

Amazon AU had most models in stock on 4 October 2026. Narwal also sells direct through au.narwal.com and narwal.net.au, where several Freos were out of stock on 14 October 2026.
