Quick answer
Roborock is the safer default: CHOICE's testing has generally rated Roborock higher for hard floors and pet hair, it has a local Australian company and service centre, and its 2026 range is heavily discounted at its own store. Ecovacs wins on two things: longer warranties on its premium models (2.5 years on the X8 Pro Omni and X11 family) and bagless OmniCyclone docks, so no dust bags to buy. A well-priced Ecovacs is still a smart buy; just check the model's warranty and avoid older models with known security issues.

Cleaning performance
CHOICE published a brand comparison in December 2025 (updated February 2026) after testing 13 Ecovacs and 9 Roborock models. Its public summary says Roborock has generally rated higher for hard floors and pet hair, both brands are weak on carpet (Roborock slightly better), mopping results are mixed, and the apps rate equally well. CHOICE also notes a good Ecovacs bought on sale can be a smart option.
In the 2026 Finder Awards survey of Australian owners, Roborock won Most Reliable and Most Recommended. Ecovacs didn't win a category in that survey.
Mopping and docks
Both brands now put roller mops on their flagships. Ecovacs moved early with the OZMO Roller (the X12S's OZMO Roller 3.0 spins at 260 rpm with 4,000 Pa of downward pressure, per Ecovacs). Roborock's answer is the SpiraFlow 2.0 roller on the Saros 20 Flow, with a 100 °C wash. Most other Roborocks use two spinning pads.
The bigger day-to-day difference is the dock. Ecovacs' OmniCyclone docks (X11 and X12S) are bagless, so there are no bags to buy. Roborock's docks use bags, which hold dust more hygienically but cost money: Roborock's store sells a 3-pack for $39.90. See our self-emptying robot vacuum guide for the trade-offs.
Warranty, support and parts
Ecovacs publishes a clear Australian warranty table: 1 year standard, 2 years for the T50/T30/T20 and N20 families, and 2.5 years for the X11, X8 Pro Omni, X5, X2 and X1 Omni. Ecovacs may repair (including with refurbished parts), replace or refund, and shipping costs may apply.
Roborock sells through Roborock Technology (Australia) Pty Ltd, uses 360 International for service and logistics, and lists a service centre in Eastern Creek, NSW. Its Saros 20 product page lists 24 months, but its Australian warranty page doesn't state a single standard term (the NZ page says 12 months, or 24 months for some models). Check the product page before you buy. Roborock's store also sells model-specific spare parts. Australian Consumer Law rights apply to both brands.
Privacy and security
Ecovacs has the more troubled record. Security researchers presented flaws in several Ecovacs models at DEF CON in August 2024, including remote camera access. Ecovacs initially said it wouldn't fix them, then committed to patches. Later that year, ABC reporting cited by Cyber Daily described hijacked Ecovacs X2 robots in the US. Ecovacs has since gained UL Solutions' "Diamond" IoT security rating for the T80, X8 and X9 families.
Roborock holds TÜV Rheinland EN 303 645 certification on several models and claims a UL Diamond rating. A 2025 Korea Consumer Agency test listed a Roborock model among those with vulnerabilities, without detailing a specific flaw. Whatever you buy, keep the firmware updated and turn off camera features you don't use.
Which should you buy?
- Choose Roborock for the best all-round cleaning per dollar right now, especially from Roborock's own store (Saros 20 at $1,999, Qrevo Edge 2 at $1,099). Read our Saros 20 review and Qrevo review.
- Choose Ecovacs if a long warranty or a bagless dock matters most, or if you can get the Deebot X8 Pro Omni on sale near $1,000.
- Either way, compare with Dreame too: see Dreame vs Roborock.
