Five robot vacuums from $299.95 to $2,999 for carpeted bedrooms, living rooms and thick rugs. We chose them for carpet-specific features: suction boost, how they keep wet mops off carpet, and how they handle pile and rug edges. Prices checked 29 September 2026.

Best for: Mixed homes with carpeted bedrooms, thick rugs or split-level thresholds

It's built around carpet: the chassis rises to keep the brush working in pile, the mops come off before vacuuming, and it climbs rug edges and thresholds most robots stall on. Vacuum Wars measured 89% embedded-sand pickup on medium-pile carpet, well above its average.

Best for wall-to-wall carpet

Dreame X60 Ultra

Best for: Fully carpeted rooms, fringed rugs and larger homes

It's the only pick with a dedicated wall-to-wall carpet mode and a claim to recognise rug tassels, and its counter-rotating DuoBrush is designed against hair wrap. It also climbs 8.8 cm double-layer thresholds, according to Dreame.

Best for: Hard floors plus carpeted rooms, where wet mops must never touch carpet

Best for: Mostly hard floors with low-pile rugs, on a sub-$1,000 budget

The strongest suction you can get for under $800, with a Carpet Avoidance mode for mopping runs. It's the cheapest way to get serious suction for rugs without giving up hot-water mop washing.

Best for: Carpeted bedrooms and rentals on a small budget

With no mop there's no risk of wet carpet, and the self-emptying dock handles the lint and grit that carpet sheds. It's a daily-maintenance robot, not a deep cleaner.

What matters on carpet

Keep your expectations realistic. CHOICE says robot vacuums averaged 26% in its carpet cleaning test against 88% on hard floors, and doesn't recommend them as a complete replacement for a regular vacuum in carpeted homes. Think daily top-up cleans, with a proper vacuum every week or two.
Mops that leave vs mops that lift. A mop that lifts 10 mm can still brush the top of a thick rug. Robots that drop their mops in the dock before vacuuming (Saros 20, Qrevo 2 Pro, and the X60 Ultra on high-pile) avoid the problem entirely.
Suction and carpet boost. Higher suction and an automatic carpet boost help with embedded grit. Some robots also offer a deep-carpet mode that does a second, criss-cross pass; on the Saros 20 you switch it on in the app.
Pile height and rug edges. Shag and high-pile rugs remain hard for every robot. Chassis that lift themselves (Saros 20, X60 Ultra) handle rug edges and door thresholds better.
Tassels and fringes. CHOICE warns that tassels and fringes can tangle in wheels and brushes. Dreame says the X60 Ultra detects tassels; otherwise set no-go zones or tuck fringes under the rug.

How we researched this

We shortlisted robot vacuums sold by Australian retailers on 29 September 2026 and compared manufacturer specs for suction, carpet modes, mop lift or removal, brush design and threshold climbing. We used independent lab-style results (Vacuum Wars) and CHOICE's Australian guidance where available, and checked prices at the Roborock Store ANZ, JB Hi-Fi, Powerland, Bunnings and brand stores. We haven't tested these robots ourselves.

What is the best robot vacuum for carpet in Australia?

On 29 September 2026, the Roborock Saros 20 at $1,999 from the Roborock Store ANZ. It claims 36,000 Pa suction, lifts its chassis for carpet up to 3 cm and drops its mops in the dock before vacuuming.

Can robot vacuums handle thick or shag carpet?

Only partly. Roborock's own Australian guidance says robots clean low-pile carpet better than shag or high-pile, which needs repeat passes. Flagships with lifting chassis cope best.

Will a robot vacuum replace my stick or barrel vacuum?

Not in a carpeted home. CHOICE found robots averaged 26% on its carpet test and warns surface-only cleaning can damage the pile over time. Use one for daily upkeep.

Will a mopping robot wet my carpet?

Robots that lift their mops (usually 10–15 mm) keep them off low-pile carpet. For thicker rugs, choose one that leaves its mops in the dock, or set no-mop zones in the app.

Are robot vacuums OK on wool rugs?

We haven't found an authoritative source on robot vacuums and wool specifically. Check the rug maker's care advice, and use no-go zones for delicate or fringed rugs.
